Ricky Brabec ( Monster Energy Honda) has endured a Dakar that he probably wanted to forget until yesterday. Brabec had the ride of his life on Stage 10 after race leader Jose Cornejo (Honda) suffered a major crash 252km and was forced to retire due to a ‘risk of concussion’ – after completing the stage.
The American rider rode like a man possessed – pulling back 5 minutes in the overall standings and winning the stage by 3m15s from Honda teammate Joan Barreda, as Kevin Benavides slipped to third on the stage. Benavides now leads the rally overall by 51s from Brabec, with Jose Cornejo officially classified another 16s down in third overall after losing 17 minutes on the stage, although Cornejo won’t take any further part in the rally.
Another American – KTM privateer Skyler Howes was the marque’s top finisher on Stage 10 in fourth, leading factory riders Matthias Walkner and Daniel Sanders and the Yamaha of Adrien van Beveren.
Todays Stage 11 of the Dakar, which is the penultimate stage of the 2021 edition, has been shortened by 47 kilometres due to bad weather in the area which erased the tracks on the course. This means American Ricky Brabec has 47 less kilometers to claw back a 51 second deficit in the overall standings from Kevin Benavides.
Stay tuned. Can Ricky, who starts first today, find his way to overall victory again?
