It appears that German automaker Volkswagen is edging closer to selling Ducati as part of a brand reorg that will streamline the company and focus predominantly on producing greener, mass-market automobiles.
Rumors circulating a month or so ago suggested VW – owner of Ducati since 2012 – was questioning the future of the brand within its quarters and would be discussing it at the annual meeting in October.
Volkswagen sold nearly 11-million cars in 2019 and wants to keep up with the times and one way it plans to do that may be by selling off Lamborghini (owned by Audi), Bugatti and Ducati.
VW CEO Herbert Diess indicated during a conference call with analysts Monday that the company has been working to restructure the three Italian brands with an eye toward forming them into a separate business. This doesn’t necessarily mean that will happen, though, he said.
